3、delinanattempttofittheevidencebetter.Atpresentitisthemajoralternativetomodelsofimperfectcom-petition;wewillcommentonitscomparativeadvantagebelow.Inonesense,contractsprovidethefoundationforalargepartofeco-nomicanalysis.Anytrade-asaquidproquo-mustbemediatedbysomefor
4、mofcontract,whetheritbeexplicitorimplicit.Inthecaseofspottrades,however,wherethetwosidesofthetransactionoccuralmostsimultaneously,thecontractualelementisusuallydownplayed,presum-ablybecauseitisregardedastrivial(althoughthisneednotbethecase;seeSection3).Inrecentyea
5、rs,economistshavebecomemuchmoreinter-estedinlong-termrelationshipswhereaconsiderableamountoftimemayelapsebetweenthequidandthequo.Inthesecircumstances,acontractbecomesanessentialpartofthetradingrelationship.Ofcourse,long-termcontractsarenotnewineconomics.Contingent
