2、Recentyearshaveseenthedevelopmentofanumberofapproachestogenreanalysis.Eachoftheseapproachesidentifiesstructuralelementsintextsandmakesstatementsaboutthepatterningoftheseelements.Muchlessattention,however,hasbeengiventotherelationshipbetweenstructuralelementsintexts.Thepaperdescribesanappro
3、achtogenreanalysiswhichaimstocomplementexistingdescriptionsofgenresbyfocusingonsemanticrelationshipsbetweenstructuralelementsintexts.Thepaperpresentsthetheoreticalbackgroundtotheapproachandthendescribesanexampleofitsapplicationwithinthecontextofthelanguagelearningclassroom.Intheexampledesc
4、ribed,learnersexamineanumberofinstancesofaparticulargenreinordertodiscoveritsprototypicalfeaturesandthesortsofvariationwhichoccuracrossinstancesoftheparticulargenre.Learnersthuslearnnotonlyhowagenreisshaped,butequallyhowtheymaymakethesediscoveriesforthemselves.INTRODUCTIONRecentyearshavese
5、enthedevelopmentofanumberofapproachestogenreanalysis.ThetwomainapproacheswhichdominatetheliteraturearethosebasedontheworkofsystemicfunctionallinguistssuchasHalliday(1985),Hasan(1984,1989),Martin(1989,1992),Ventola(1987),Christie(1989)andKress(1989,1993)andthosebasedontheworkofJohnSwales(19
6、81,1984,1990).Thefirstoftheseapproachesisbasedonasocial-semioticperspectiveonlanguagedescription(HallidayandHasan,1989)whereasthesecondoftheseisperhapsmoreeclecticinitsperceptionofthenotionofgenre.Bothoftheseperspectivesidentifystructuralelementsintextsandmakestatementsaboutthepatterningof
7、theseelements.Muchlessattention,however,isgiventotherelationshipbetweenstructuralelementsintexts(Lemke,1988).Thispaperdescribesanapproachtogenreanalysiswhichaimstocomplementexistingdescriptionsofgenresbyfocusingonsemanticrelationshipsbetweenstructuralelementsi
