3、yspellingchangesproposedintheUnitedStatesbyWebsterhimself,andintheearly20thcenturybytheSimplifiedSpellingBoard,nevercaughton.AmongtheadvocatesofspellingreforminEngland,theinfluencesofthosewhopreferredtheNorman(orAnglo-French)spellingsofcertainwordsprovedtobedecisive.Subsequentspellingadj

4、ustmentsintheUnitedKingdomhadlittleeffectonpresent-dayAmericanspellingsandvice-versa.Inmanycases,AmericanEnglishdeviatedinthe19thcenturyfrommainstreamBritishspelling,butithasalsoretainedsomeolderforms.ThespellingsystemsofmostCommonwealthcountriesandIreland,forthemostpart,closelyresemblet
