2、rtsandtoreviewourprogressafteroneyear. That’swhatwe’vedoneconsistentlyoverthecourseofthepast12months—-inweeklyupdatesfromthefield,inmonthlymeetingswithmynationalsecurityteam,andinmyfrequentconsultationswithourAfghan,Pakistaniandcoalitionpartners. Andthat’swh
3、atwe’vedoneaspartofourannualreview,whichisnowcomplete. IwanttothankSecretaryClintonandSecretaryGatesfortheirleadership. SinceJointChiefofStaffChairman,AdmiralMullen,isinAfghanistan,I’mpleasedthatwe’rejoinedbyViceChairman,GeneralCartwright. Oureffortsalsorefl
4、ectthededicationofAmbassadorRichardHolbrooke,whosememorywehonorandwhoseworkwe’llcontinue. Indeed,thetributestoRichardthathavepouredinfromaroundtheglobespeaktoboththeenormousimpactofhislifeandtothebroadinternationalcommitmenttooursharedeffortsinthiscriticalre
5、gion. IhavespokenwithPresidentKarzaiofAfghanistanaswellasPresidentZardariofPakistananddiscussedourfindingsandthewayforwardtogether. Today,IwanttoupdatetheAmericanpeopleonourreview—-ourassessmentofwherewestandandareaswhereweneedtodobetter. Iwanttobeclear.
6、Thiscontinuestobeaverydifficultendeavor. ButIcanreportthatthankstotheextraordinaryserviceofourtroopsandciviliansontheground,weareontracktoachieveourgoals.It’simportanttorememberwhyweremaininAfghanistan. ItwasAfghanistanwherealQaedaplottedthe9/11attacksthatmu
7、rdered3,000innocentpeople. ItisthetribalregionsalongtheAfghan-Pakistanborderfromwhichterroristshavelaunchedmoreattacksagainstourhomelandandourallies. AndifanevenwiderinsurgencyweretoengulfAfghanistan,thatwouldgivealQaedaevenmorespacetoplantheseattacks. Andth
