2、55youchung@ece.utah.edu**TheBoeingCompany,St.Louis,MOAbstractThelocationofanopenorshortcircuitedwireislinearlyproportionaltothecapacitanceorinductanceofthewire,respectively.Severaltypesofsimpleandinexpensivecircuitstomeasurethesevaluesweretestedandfoundtohavehighlyvariableperformance.Opencircuited(
3、capacitance)measurementsareveryeffective.Shortcircuited(inductance)measurementsaremoredifficult,andnotallofthecircuitsworkedwellforshortcircuits.A555timercircuitwasfoundtohavethebestoverallperformanceforlocatingbothopenandshortcircuitedwires,althoughforspecificcases,othercircuitscanbebetter.Also,ca

5、insidevirtuallyallofthemajorstructuresandsystemswithwhichwearefamiliar.Wiringispervasivefromprivate,commercialandmilitaryaircrafttothespaceshuttle,modesthomestomassiveskyscrapers,communicationnetworksforbusiness,entertainment,datacollection,andcontrolofcriticalsystems,overlandpowerlinestonuclearrea
6、ctorsandpowerplants,trains,warningsystems,andswitchingstationstoships,dockyards,cranes,andautonomousloadingsystems,andevendowntothe“simple”familycar.Astheseburiedwiresagetheymaybegintocrackandfray,ortheirconnectorsmaybreak,corrode,leakorbedamagedincarelessmaintenance.Detectingandlocatingthesefaults
