4、andcitywerenamedforthe17thcenturyDukeofYork,JamesStuart,futureJamesIIandVIIofEnglandandScotland.NewYorkwasinhabitedbytheAlgonquian,Iroquois,andLenapeNativeAmericangroupsatthetimeDutchsettlersmovedintotheregionintheearly17thcentury.In1609,theregionwasfirstclaimedbyHenr
5、yHudsonfortheDutch.FortNassauwasbuiltnearthesiteofthepresent-daycapitalofAlbanyin1614.TheDutchsoonalsosettledNewAmsterdamandpartsoftheHudsonRiverValley,establishingthecolonyofNewNetherland.TheBritishtookoverthecolonybyannexationin1664.ThebordersoftheBritishcolony,theP
6、rovinceofNewYork,wereroughlysimilartothoseofthepresent-daystate.AboutonethirdofallthebattlesoftheRevolutionaryWartookplaceinNewYork.NewYorkbecameanindependentstateonJuly9,1776,andenacteditsconstitutionin1777.ThestateratifiedtheUnitedStatesConstitutiononJuly26,1788tobe
