2、nofintegratedcircuits(ICs).HencetheVHSICHardwareDe-scriptionLanguage(VHDL)wasdeveloped.ItwassubsequentlydevelopedfurtherundertheauspicesoftheInstituteofElectricalandElectronicEngineers(IEEE)andadoptedintheformoftheIEEEStandard1076,StandardVHDLLanguageReferenceManual,in1
3、987.ThisfirststandardversionofthelanguageisoftenreferredtoasVHDL-87.LikeallIEEEstandards,theVHDLstandardissubjecttoreviewfromtimetotime.Commentsandsuggestionsfromusersofthe1987standardwereanalyzedbytheIEEEworkinggroupresponsibleforVHDL,andin1992arevisedversionofthestand
4、ardwasproposed.Thiswaseventuallyadoptedin1993,givingusVHDL-93.Asecondroundofrevisionofthestandardwasstartedin1998.Thatprocesswascompletedin2001,givingusVHDL-2002.Afterthat,furtherdevelopmenttookplaceintheIEEEworkinggroupandinatechnicalcommitteeofanorganization,Accellera
5、,whosecharteristopromotestan-dardsforelectronicsdesign.Theseeffortsledtothecurrentversionofthelanguage,VHDL-2008,describedinthisbook.VHDLisdesignedtofillanumberofneedsinthedesignprocess.First,itallowsde-scriptionofthestructureofasystem,thatis,howitisdecomposedintosubsys
6、temsandhowthosesubsystemsareinterconnected.Second,itallowsthespecificationofthefunc-tionofasystemusingfamiliarprogramminglanguageforms.Third,asaresult,itallowsthedesignofasystemtobesimulatedbeforebeingmanufactured,sothatdesignerscanquicklycomparealternativesandtestforco
7、rrectnesswithoutthedelayandexpenseofhardwareprototyping.Fourth,itallowsthedetailedstructureofadesigntobesynthesizedfromamoreabstractspecification,allowingdesignerstoconcentrateonmorestrategicdesigndecisionsandreducingtimetomarket.Thisbookpresentsastructuredguidetothemod
