4、side,amessagethathadbeensenttofulfillapromise.Likethatofallbottleslefttothewhimoftheoceans,itscoursewasunpredictable.Windsandcurrentsplaylargerolesinanybottle’sdirection;stormsanddebrismayshiftitscourseaswell.Occasionallyafishingnetwillsnagabottleandcarryitadozenmiles

5、intheoppositedirectioninwhichitwasheaded.Theresultisthattwobottlesdroppedsimultaneouslyintotheoceanmightendupacontinentapart,orevenonoppositesidesoftheglobe.Thereisnowaytopredictwhereabottlemighttravel,andthatispartofitsmystery.Thismysteryhasintriguedpeopleforaslongas

6、therehavebeenbottles,andafewpeoplehavetriedtolearnmoreaboutit.In1929acrewofGermanscientistssetouttotrackthejourneyofoneparticularbottle.ItwassettoseaintheSouthIndianOceanwithanoteinsideaskingthefindertorecordthelocationwhereitwashedupandtothrowitbackintothesea.By1935i

7、thadroundedtheworldandtraveledapproximatelysixteenthousandmiles,thelongestdistanceofficiallyrecorded.Messagesinbottleshavebeenchronicledforcenturiesandincludesomeofthemostfamousnamesinhistory.BenFranklin,forinstance,usedmessage-carryingbottlestocompileabasicknowledgeo

8、fEastCoastcurrentsinthemid-1700s—informationthatisstillinusetothisday.EvennowtheU.S.Navyusesbottlestocompileinformationontidesandcurrents,andtheyarefrequentlyusedtotrackthedirectionofoilspills.Themostcelebratedmessageeversentconcernedayoungsailorin1784,ChunosukeMatsuy
