4、ecausewehavedecidedthatourpersonalexistencehassomepositivevalue;ifwedecidetorebel,itmustbebecausewehavedecidedthatahumansocietyhassomepositivevalue.Butineachcasethevaluesarenot"given"—thatistheillusionisttrickplayedbyreligionorbyphilosophy.Theyhavetobededucedfromt
5、heconditionsofliving,andaretobeacceptedalongwiththesufferingentailedbythelimitsofthepossible.Socialvaluesarerulesofconductimplicitinatragicfate;andtheyofferahopeofcreation.TheRebel,thatistosay,offersusaphilosophyofpolitics.ItisakindofbookthatappearsonlyinFrance,de
6、voted,inapassionateintellectualsense,totheexaminationofsuchconceptsaslibertyandterror.Notthatitisatheoreticalwork—onthecontrary,itisanexaminationoftheactualsituationofEuropetoday,informedbyaprecisehistoricalknowledgeofthepasttwocenturiesofitssocialdevelopment.Itis
