4、rementsitisrevealedthatZnFez04particlespreparedareinsuperparamagneticstateatambienttemperature.Adoubletwithanaveragequadrupolesplittingof0.8mm/sisobservedfortheas-milledsampleat295K,whichismuchlargerthanthatforbulkZnFez04preparedbytraditionalceramicmethodandthatforultrafineZnFez04parti
5、clespreparedbytheco-precipitationmethodThisindicateslargerstructuraldefectsinthenanometer-sizedZnFez04particlespreparedbyhigh-energyballmilling.01999ActaMetallurgicaInc.INTRODUCTIONHigh-energyballmilling(mechanicalalloyingormechanicalgrinding)hasbeenwidelyusedforthesynthesisofmaterials
6、,whicharefarfromequilibrium,suchasnanocrystalline,amorphous,andsupersaturatedalloysandceramics(l-4).Lefelshteletal.(5)andKosmacandCourtney(6)havereportedontheattemptedsynthesisofZnFez04andNiFe204bymillingofCL-Fe203withZnOandNiOpowders,respectively.Theformationofsinglespine1phaseswasnot
7、achieved.Byvirtueofmagneticproperties,zincferrite,ZnFez04,anditssolidsolutionswithotherferritesarewidelyusedintheelectronicindustry.ZnFez04hasanormalspine1structurewithzincionsexclusivelyoccupiedinthetetrahedralsites.Severaltechniques,e.g.,co-precipitation(‘l),sol-gel(X),andtwinrolle
