3、ntreactionsbetweentherespectivemetalchlorideandalkalisulphideoralkalineearthsulphidewereinducedinasteady-statemanner,leadingtotheformationofmetalsulphia!enanoparticles.Asimplewashingprocesstoremovethechlorideby-productyieldedseparatedparticlesofZnS,CdSandCe,S,o
4、f-8nm,-4nmand-20nm,respectively.Theresultingparticlesandcrystallitesizesweredependentonthemillingconditions,startingmaterialsandthepresenceofadiluent.StructuralchangewithdecreasingparticlesizewasobservedforCdS&Ce,S,.01999ActaMetallurgicakc.INTRODUCTIONMetalsulp
5、hideshavebeenrecognisedasadvancedmaterialsformanyapplicationsincludingopto-electricmaterials,phosphors,pigmentsandmagneticmaterials.Nanoparticleshavesignificantpotentialfortheseapplicationsduetotheirsmallsize,high-surfaceareaandlowsinteringtemperatures.Inpartic
6、ular,semiconductorquantumdotshaveattractedconsiderableattentioninmanyfieldsofscience(1).Inrecentyears,anumberofstudieshavebeencarriedouttodevelopmethodsforsynthesisingsulphidenanoparticles(l-4).Recently,Dingetal.(5-9)havereportedthesynthesisofnano-sizedparticle
7、sofanumberoftransitionmetalsandceramicsincludingFe,Cu,Ni,Co,Al,O,andZrO,bymechanochemicalprocessing.ThispaperreviewsthesynthesisofZnS,CdSandCe&nanoparticlesbymechanochemicalreactionsbetweentherespectivemetalchlorideandalkalisulphideoralkalineearthsulphide(10,ll
