3、clesofmanydifferentmaterialstobeproducedwithhighpurityandnarrowsizedistribution,anditallowseasytranportanddepositionoftheparticlesontoanysubstrate.Theparticlequalityhasbeeninvestigatedbytransmissionelectronmicroscopy,revealingahighdegreeofcrystallinity,especiallyafter
4、sinten’ngathightemperatures.01999ActaMetallurgicahc.INTRODUCTIONTheuseofverysmallparticlesasbuildingblocksinelectroniccircuitsandnanostructuredmaterialsdemandsthattheseparticlesbeproducedwithhighefficiencyandpurity.Formanyapplications,e.g.,whereCoulombblockadeorquantu
5、msizeeffectsarestudied,itisimportantthattheparticleshaveanarrowsizedistribution.Acommonmeansforproducingparticleswithanarrowsizedistributioniscolloidchemistry,whichcangivegoodresults.Aproblemwithcolloidsisthattheparticlesmustbecoatedwithasurfactantiftheyarenottocoales
6、ce,whichwillinevitablyintroducesomecontaminants.Also,wetchemicalmethodsare,ingeneral,lesscleanthangas-phasemethods,andusuallyinvolveproductioninbatches.Inourapproach,throughaerosoltechnology,theparticlesareproducedinacontinuousflow,’andinaverycleanenvironment.Themetho
7、disnaturallysuitedforlargescaleproduction.Wepresentacharacterizationofthemethoditself,andofthegoldparticlesproduced.EXPERIMENTALAschematicoftheaerosolfabricationapparatusisshowninfig.1;itissimilartotheonepreviouslyusedtoproducenanoparticlesofAg(1).Itworksasfollows:Ace
8、ramicboatcontaininghighpuritygold(99.9999%)isplacedinsideatubefurnace,whichisheatedto1650OC,creatingagoldvapor.Throughthefur
