4、erequiredfoundationforsolvingproblemsinmorespe-cializedapplicationareassuchasspeechrecognition,opticalcharacterrecognition,signalanalysis,andsoon.Since1973,therehasbeenanimmensewealthofe®ort,andinmanycasesprogress,onthetopicsweaddressedintheFirstEdition.Thep
5、aceofprogressinalgorithmsforlearningandpatternrecognitionhasbeenexceededonlybytheimprovementsincomputerhardware.SomeoftheoutstandingproblemsacknowledgedintheFirstEditionhavebeensolved,whereasothersremainasfrus-tratingasever.Takenwiththemanifestusefulnessofpa
6、tternrecognition,thismakesthe¯eldextremelyvigorousandexciting.Whilewewrotethenthatpatternrecognitionmightappeartobearatherspecial-izedtopic,itisnowabundantlyclearthatpatternrecognitionisanimmenselybroadsubject,withapplicationsin¯eldsasdiverseasspeechrecognit
7、ion,opticalcharacterrecognition,handwritingandgesturerecognition,lipreading,geologicalanalysis,doc-umentsearchingandtherecognitionofbubblechambertracksinelementaryparticleaccelerators;itcentraltoahostofman-machineinterfaceproblems,suchaspen-basedcomputing.Th
8、esizeofthecurrentvolume(whichprecludedmaterialonsceneanalysis,includedinthe¯rstedition)isatestamenttothebodyofestablishedthe-ory.Whereasweexpectmostofourreaderswillbeinterestedindevelopingpatternrecognitionsystems,perhapsafewwillbeactiveinunderstandingexisti
