4、rdwareupgrade,operatingprocedures,risermonitoringandVIVsuppressiondevices.Futuretrendswillbediscussed,focussingonadvancesinhardwaredesignandmodificationstoexistingequipment.ThepaperisbasedonBP’sexperienceofdrillingconventionalwellsinregionssuchasSakhalin
5、VandWestofShetland,andHPHTwellsintheCaspianSeaandEgyptWestNileDelta.IntroductionDrillingcostsoftenrepresentthelargestproportionofCAPEXforgreenfielddevelopments.Asingleappraisalwellinadeepwaterorremoteregionmayrepresentaninvestmentoftheorderof$50-100M.The
6、reisalsoagrowingtrendfordrillingrigstostayconnectedtothewellheadforlongerdurationsduetofinancialdriverssuchas;theneedtoaccessdeeperHPHTgasfields,sidetrackduringappraisaldrilling,conversionofappraisalwellsforproduction(socalled‘keepers’)anduseofdrill-thro
7、ughworkoverpractices.HPHTwellsarenowbeingdrilledtodepthsofTVD4500moverdurationsrangingfromafewmonthstotwoyears.Inthiscontext,thereisastrongbusinesscaseforriskmanagementofthestructuralintegrityoftheriser,wellheadandconductorsystemtoensurethatthedrillingca
