2、s”eventuallyachievedprominence,butsomeofthemwouldachieveitfasterthanothers,andZelazny’ssubsequentcareerwasoneofthemostmeteoricinthehistoryofSF.ThefirstZelaznystorytoattractwidenoticewas“ARoseforEcclesiastes,”publishedin1963(itwaslaterselectedbyvoteoftheSFWA
3、membershipasoneofthebestSFstoriesofalltime).Bytheendofthatdecade,hehadwontwoNebulaAwardsandtwoHugoAwardsandwaswidelyregardedasoneofthetwomostimportantAmericanSFwritersofthesixties(theotherwasSamuelR.Delany).Bytheendofthe1970s,althoughhiscriticalacceptanceas
4、animportantsciencefictionwriterhaddimmed,hislongseriesofnovelsabouttheenchantedlandofAmber—beginningwithNinePrincesinAmber—hadmadehimoneofthemostpopularandbest-sellingfantasywritersofourtime,andinspiredfanclubsandfanzinesworldwide.Zelazny’sapproachtofantasy
5、wassimilartothebrisk,wise•cracking,anachronisticslantofthedeCampandPratt“HaroldShea”storiessuchasTheIncompleteEnchanter,butinasomewhatdifferentkey,withlessemphasisonwhimsy(veryfewauthors,withtheexceptionofdeCampandPratt,T.H.White,andLewisCarroll,wereeverrea
6、llyabletousewhimsysuccessfully)andmoreemphasisonactionandondramatic—andoftenquitetheatrical—showdownsbetweenimmenselypowerfuladversaries.Still,theZelaznyhero(whowasoftenfundamentallythesameperson,whetherhewascalledCorwinorConradorSam)faceshissupernaturalfoe
