4、ementLaboratory(AML)providesNISTtheabilitytomeettheneedsofU.S.scienceandindustryforsophisticatedmeasurementsandstandards,allowingNISTtobemoregloballycompetitive.TheAMLisanessentialcomponentofNIST'senhancedmissionofsupportingAmerica'stechnologicalcompetitiveness.Theadvancesinsciencearenowats
5、ubatomicornanolevels.Researchatthislevelishighlyaffectedbythesurroundingenvironment,creatingtheneedforenvironmentalstabilityinthelaboratory.Completedin2004,theAMLhasfew,ifany,equalsamongtheworld'sresearchfacilities.Itoffersanunprecedentedcombinationoffeaturesdesignedtovirtuallyeliminateenvi
6、ronmentalinterferencesthatundermineresearchattheverytipoftheleadingedgeofmeasurementscienceandtechnology.2Thisnew$235million,49,860square-meter(536,500square-foot)facilityprovidesanupgradetothetechnologicalcapacityoftheNISTfacilities.TheAMLfeaturesfiveseparatewingswithstringentenvironmental
7、controlsonparticulatematter,temperature,humidity,vibrationandelectromagneticinterferences.TheAMLallowsNISTtoprovidethesophisticatedmeasurementsandstandardsneededbyU.S.industryandthescientificcommunityforkey21stcenturytechnologiessuchasnanotechnology,semi
