2、eliness,andsocialanxiety.ScoresontheCHSwerepositivelyrelatedtohowpleasurablepeoplefoundtheirinteractions,howcon®denttheyfeltintheirinteractions,andhowmuchtimetheyspentwithothers.Moreover,thestrengthoftheserelationshipswasmoderatedbydepression,butnotbyothermeasuresofadjustment.The
3、serelationshipswerestrongerforpeoplewhowerelessdepressed.Incontemporarysocietytheworldover,humorandlaughterarefrequentlypresumedtobemeanspeoplecanusetocopewithlife'sdiculties(Ziv1988).Suchculturalbeliefsarere¯ectedinsloganssuchas``Laughteristhebestmedicine,''andinlyricssuchas``Le
4、tasmilebeyourumbrella''and``Packupyourtroublesinyouroldkitbagandsmile,smile,smile.''Consistentwithsuchrecommendations,researchontherelationshipsbetweenlaughterandcopingwithstresshasfoundthatpeoplecananddousehumortocopewithstressandadversity.More-over,thisresearchsuggeststhatthere
5、aremeaningfulindividualdierencesintheextenttowhichpeopledothis.Thepresentstudywasintendedtoexpandourunderstandingofpeople'suseofhumorasacopingmechanismbyexaminingtherelation-shipsbetweenthisconstructandpeople'sday-to-daysociallivesandtheirgeneralpsychologicaladjustment.Thestudywa
