2、r,IsaacBeeckman,whofosteredhisinterestinmathematicsandphysics.AfterfurthertravelsinEuropehesettledinParisin1625,andcameintocontactwithscientists,theologians,andphilosophersinthecircleoftheMinimfriarMarinMersenne.Attheendof1928DescartesleftforHolland,whichhemadehishomeuntil1648;hedevotedhimselftoc

3、arryingforwardthemathematical,scientific,andphilosophicalworkhehadbeguninParis.WhenhelearnedofthecondemnationofGalileoforheresyin1633,heabandonedhisplanstopublishatreatiseonphysics,andunderpressurefromhisfriendsconsentedtohavetheDiscourseontheMethodprinted,withthreeaccompany-ingessaysontopicsinwhi

4、chhehadmadediscoveries.In1641hisMeditationsappeared,settingoutthemetaphysicalunderpinningsofhisphysicaltheories;thesewereaccompaniedbyobjectionswrittenbycontemporaryphilosophers,andDescartes’srepliestothem.HiswritingsprovokedcontroversyinbothFranceandHolland,wherehisscientificideaswerebannedinoneu
