2、mperaturefuelcellsprovidethehighestefficiencieswiththelowestemissions.TheresultsofafuelcelldemonstrationutilizingcoalminemethaneconductedinHopedale,Ohioin2003arepresented.ThedemonstrationwassupportedbytheU.S.DepartmentofEnergy,NationalEnergyTechnologyLaboratoryand
3、wasconductedatatestsiteoperatedbyNorthwestFuelDevelopment,Inc.ThesiteistheNelmsMiningComplexinHarrisonCounty,Ohio,ownedbyAEPOhioCoalLLCatthetimeofthedemonstration.Forthisdemonstration,FuelCellEnergyusedoneofitshightemperaturecarbonatefuelcellpowerplantsdesignedfor
4、operationwithnaturalgasfuel.Theseplantsarecurrentlybeinginstalledinhotels,hospitals,datacenters,universities,wastewatertreatmentplants,andothercommercialandindustrialapplications.Thisdemonstrationindicatedthatcoalminemethanethatisbelowpipelinequalitystandardscould
5、beutilizedathighefficiencytoproducepowerbyafuelcell.The200kilowatt(kW)carbonatefuelcellpowerplanttestedgenerated140kWnetatanefficiencyof40.1percent.Thehighefficiencyandlowemissionsofhightemperaturefuelcellpowerplantsmakethemanattractivealternativetomitigationofgre
6、enhousegasfromcoalminemethanewheretheeconomicsarefavorable.INTRODUCTIONCoalminemethaneisaby-productofcoalminingoperationsthatrequireitsremovalforsafetyreasons.Inthepast,mostminingoperationshavesimplyventedthemethanefromcoalseamspriortoandduringminingwithoutattempt
7、ingtoutilizeit.Morerecently,thevalueofthisresourcehasbeenrecognizedandthecollectionanduseofcoalminemethaneisgainingmomentumbothforenvironmentalandeconomicreasons.Whileactiveminesneedtoremovemethanefromthecoalseampriortoandduringminingoperations,thereisalsoasignifi
8、cantpotentialforcoalminemethanerecoveryfromabandonedmines.Methaneis23timesmorepotentthancarbondioxideattrappingheatintheatmospherebasedontheGlobalWarmin
