2、ntlydonetheworkreportedinPesetsky(1987),andreceivedinthemailacopyofKiss(1986).SinceIhadarguedatlengththatD-linkedwh-phrasesdonotdisplaySuperiorityeffects.IwasastonishedbyaparadigmreportedbyKiss,whichappearshereasexample(98).Thesefactsremainedstubbornlyinmymindforthen

3、extdecadeasanunsolvedpuzzle.KissdidnotpublishthispaperintheformthatIreceivedÑand,infact,didnotevenrecalldiscoveringthecrucialfactswhensheheardthisworkpresentedasatalkin1998.Butthefactsarehersnonetheless.ThesecondluckyeventoccurredinSpring1994.IhadjusttaughtmyownPeset

4、sky(1987)toagraduatesyntaxclass,buthadnotassignedaproblemsetonit.ThenexttopiconthesyllabuswasAntecedentContainedDeletion,whichIwasteachingforthefirsttime.Ineededaproblemsetthatcoveredbothtopics,andtheideapoppedintomyheadthatperhapsPesetsky(1987)mightmakeapredictionab

5、outAntecedentContainedDeletioninwhphrasesthatshouldhavemovedovertlybutdidn'tÐapredictionwhichmightserveasthetopicofasingle,unifiedproblemsetonthetwotopics.Theresultwastheobservationin(60)and(61).AconversationwithChrisKennedy(whohadbeenthinkingaboutthisissueindependen

6、tly)reinforcedmyinterestinthiscontrast.Finally,in1996(adecadeafterIfiledKiss'sfactsawayinmymemory),IwasluckyenoughtohearapresentationofBeck(1996)andBeckandKim(1996)bySigridBeckataninformalmeetingofMIT'sstudent-organized"LFReadingGroup".Herobservationsimmediatelyremin

7、dedmeofKiss'sobservations.ThepresentpapergrewoutofmyattempttounderstandtheconnectionbetweenthesetwosetsofobservationsÐaneffortwhichledmerightbacktothedatafrommyproblemsetonAntecedentContainedDeletion.Myproposalshaveundergoneseveraltransformations,withtheresultthatsom
