2、ntofitsroadsneedheavyrepair,producingaround2.2milliontonsofasphaltpavementwaste.Thequestionarisesashowtorecyclethesewastedmaterialsandmakefulluseoftheminnewpavementconstructionandrehabilitationworks.Themosteffectivewaytoprotecttheenvironmentandsavecosts,especiallyi
3、nthewestofChina,isbecominganurgenttaskforroadengineers.Thispaperhastwoobjectives.ThefirstistoreportonthefoamingcharacteristicsofaselectionofbitumentypescommonlyusedinroadconstructioninChina.Foamingcharacteristicsaredescribedintermsof“expansionratio”and“half-life”.T
4、hesecondistoevaluatethephysicalperformanceofoneoftheseofthesetypesofbitumen,asabinderinbotharecycledbituminouspavingmixtureandanewgravelmixture.2.FOAMINGCHARACTERISTICSOFBITUMEN“Expansionratio”and“halflife”havebecomefairlywellknowntermsforcharacterizingfoamedbitume
5、n.Inthisresearchfourtypesofbitumen,KoreaAH-70,ShellAH-70,ZhenhaiAH-70,andEssoAH-70werecharacterizedusingWirtgenWLB10foamedbitumentestingequipment.TheTable1showspenetration,softeningpoint,ductilityandwaxcontentofthefourbitumentypes.Table1.Propertiesofthefourtypesofb

7、emperatureorhumidity.Thefoamcharacteristicswereinvestigatedwithbitumentemperatures,oooorespectively,of140C,150C,160Cand170C.Thequantityofwateraddedtoproducethefoamwasalsovariedateachofthesetemperatures,withtestsbeingcarriedoutusing1%,2%,3%,4%and5%bymassofwater.Expa
