1、TheIDNVariantIssuesProject:ProposedProjectPlanforNextSteps20February2012Background:On20April2011,ICANNannouncedtheIDNVariantIssuesProjecttoexplorethebenefitsandrisksassociatedwiththepotentialinclusionofIDNvariantTLDsintheDNSrootzone.ThisprojectwasinitiatedbytheICANNBoardofDirec
2、torsin2010.PhaseIinvolvedtheformationofsixcasestudyteamsfortheArabic,Chinese,Cyrillic,Devanagari,GreekandLatinscripts.TheseteamswerecomprisedofcommunityexpertswithsupportfromICANNthatworkedonidentifyingissuesrelatedtoIDNvariantTLDsforeachparticularscript,resultinginthepublicati
3、oninOctober2011ofsixindividualreportsdetailingtheirfindings.PhaseIIfocusedonintegratingthosesixcasestudyreportsintotheIntegratedIssuesReport.Tocompletethisphase,ICANNformedacoordinationteamcomprisedofexpertsfromeachofthecasestudyteams.ThecoordinationteamadvisedICANNoncompleting
4、theIntegratedIssuesReport,whichsummarizesandcategorizesthevariousissuesrelatedtotheidentificationandmanagementofIDNvariantTLDs.On23December2011,ICANNpublishedforpubliccommentthedraftIntegratedIssuesReport.Followingthepubliccommentperiod,ICANNpublishedaSummaryandAnalysisofcommen
5、tsreceivedandconsideredthisinputinproducingthefinalIntegratedIssuesReport.NextSteps:Thenextstepsoutlinedinthisprojectplanfollowtherecommendationspresentedinsection7ofthefinalIntegratedIssuesReport.Theplaninvolvesperformingfeasibilitystudiesoncertaintypesofvariantsanddevelopingt
6、ools,processes,andprotocolstosupportspecificsolutions,incooperationwiththeappropriateexperts.ForthepurposeofarrivingatadeterminationinprincipleonwhattypesofvariantTLDscouldbepotentiallyimplemented,itisexpectedthattherequiredworkcanbecompletedbytheendof2012.However,novariantTLDs
7、canactuallybedelegateduntilthenecessarycommunityworkonthecodepointrepertoireandlabelgenerationprocessfortheroothasbeensufficientlywelldeveloped.Theplandescribesseveraldiscreteprojectstobecompleted,alongwithestimatedresourcesneededtocompletethem.Theplanwilluseresourcesalreadyded
