2、ersity,Kobe657,JapanReceived26June1987Revised17March1988ABSTRACTHeavyrainfallonthesouthsideoftheRokkoMountainshasoftencausedseverelandslidesanddebrisflows.Analysisoftheannualsummationofrainfallinexcessof100mm/dayshowsthattherainfallinthisareahasdominantperiodicitiesofabout25-3
3、0,10-13,and5-7years.Theperiodofabout25-30yearscorrespondstothatofoccurrenceofthenaturaldisastersproducedbyheavyrainfall;yearswhenthemaximumrainfallcorrespondtoyearswhentherehavebeenseverelandslidesanddebrisflowsinthearea.Temporalchangeinthisrainfallmayprovideafirstapproximatio
4、nforerosionalforce.Analysesoftreeringwidthfromthesemountainsindicatethatthesequenceshaveadominantperiodicityofabout25-30years.Cross-spectralanalysesforrainfallandringwidthinthisareashowhighcoherencyfortheperiodsofabout25-30years;evidencethatvariationsintheringwidthmaybeusedasp

6、mmonintheKobearea,especiallyonthesouthsideoftheRokkoMountains(Kashiwayaetal.,1984).Someslopemovementsareknowntoaffectthegrowthoftreerings(Shroder,1978).Changesintreestructure(ringwidth,density,etc.)havebeenusedassurrogateinformationtoshowvariationsinclimaticconditions(Fritts,1
7、976;Hughesetal.,1982)andforanalysingseasonalandannualamountsofrainfall.Weelsewhereindicatedthepossibilitythatsometypesofrainfallthatcauselandslidesaffecttreeringdevelopment,andmaybeseenasakindoferosionalforce(Kashiwayaetal.,1986,1987a).Temporalchangeintheerosionalfeaturesprodu
