6、toarecord19%.SoalthoughAmerica'stradedeficitwithChinanarrowed,ChinanowaccountsforalmosthalfofAmerica'stotaldeficit,upfromlessthanone-thirdin2008.Tradefrictionswiththerestoftheworldarehottingup.OnDecember30thAmerica'sInternationalTradeCommissionapprovednewtariffsonimportsofChinesesteelpipes

7、,whichitruledwerebeingunfairlysubsidised.ThisisthelargestcaseofitskindsofarinvolvingChina.OnDecember22ndEuropeanUniongovernmentsvotedtoextendanti-dumpingdutiesonshoesimportedfromChinaforanother15months.ForeignersinsistthatthemainreasonforChina'sgrowingmarketshareisthatthegovernmentinBeijin

8、ghaskeptitscurrencyweak.ButthereareseveralotherreasonswhyChina'sexportsheldupbetterthanthoseofitscompetitorsduringtheglobalrecession.Lowerincomesencouragedconsumerstotradedowntocheapergoods,andtheeliminationoftextilequotasinJanuary2009allowedChinatoincreaseitssliceofthatmarket.Howhighcould
