3、yspokeAfrikaansback.Inthosedaysofapartheid,AfrikanerswererulersofSouthAfricaandpariahseverywhereelse.TodaythethreemillionAfrikanersaremostlyforgotten.In1994theyhandedpowertoNelsonMandelaandinstantlybecameirrelevant.FreddeVries,aDutchwriterlivinginJohannesburg,wonde
4、redwhathadbecomeofthem.Hisanswer-awonderfulbookofdeepreportage-isabouttoappearasAfrikanersinDutch,andRigtingbedonnerd(“Directionless”,roughly)inAfrikaans.Underapartheid,therewasonlyoneacceptedwaytobeanAfrikaner.YoubelongedtotheDutchReformedchurch,youlikedrugby,andy
5、ouvotedforapartheid.Renegadesweretreatedastraitorstothetribe.Suddenly,in1994,everythingdissolved.“TheoncesounitedAfrikanerpeoplearelikeaboxofnightmothsafterthelidislifted,”writesdeVries.“Theyblinktheireyesagainstthebrightsun,andflitconfusedlyindifferentdirections.”
