3、tudesarekindly,too.Inonenationalsurvey,61percentofstudentssaidthatprofessorsfrequentlytreatedthem“likeacolleague/peer,”whileonly8percentheardfrequent“negativefeedbackabouttheiracademicwork.”Morethanhalfleavethegraduationceremonybelievingthattheyare“wellprepared”inspeaking,writin
4、g,criticalthinkinganddecision-making.Butwhilethey’recontentwithteachers,studentsaren’tmuchinterestedinthemasthinkersandmentors.Theyenrollincoursesandcompleteassignments,butfurtherengagementisminimal.Onemeasureofinterestinwhatprofessorsbelieve,whatwisdomtheypossessapartfromthecon
5、tentofthecourse,isinteractionoutsideofclass.It’softenduringincidentalconversationsheldafterthebellringsandawayfromthedemandsofthesyllabusthatthetransferofinsightbeginsandastudent’semulationgrows.Studentsemailteachersallthetime—whywalkacrosscampuswhenyoucanfireanotefromyourroom?—
6、butthosequeriesaretoocurtforgenuinementoring.Weneedfacetime.Here,though,arethemeagernumbers.Foramajorityofundergraduates,beyondthetwoandahalfhoursperweekinclass,contactrangesfromnegligibletononexistent.Intheirfirstyear,33percentofstudentsreportthattheynevertalkwithprofessorsouts
