2、RODUCTIONOutokumpuOyhasproducednickelatHarjavaltaWorksinFinlandsince1960.Theproductionhasbeenbasedonflashsmeltingtechnologyandelectrowinningofnickel.Thecapacityoftheprocesshasbeenincreasedgraduallyto18000tpabyseveralsmallexpansionsandprocessimprovements.Thepr
3、oductionreliedondomesticnickelconcentratesuntilthaAttheturnofthe1990sanewnickelstrategywasdevelopedandOutokumpustartednickelexplorationinAustraiiaandCanada.TheworksecuredlongtermdeliverycontractsofnickelconcentratesfromMt.KeithandstartingofminingoperationsatF
4、orrestaniaandSilverSwaninAustralia.AtthesametimeOutokumpustudieddifferentalterativestoexpandthenickelandcopperproduction.n1993,adecisionwasmadetoinvestintheexpansionandmodernisationofHarjavaltaoperations.Outokumpudecidedtoincreasenickelproductionfrom18000tpat
5、o32000tpaandblistercopperproductionfrom100000tpato160000tpa.ThecopperrefineryinPoriwasexpandedfrom72000tpato125000tpa.Inaddition,theexpansionincludedanewoxygenplant,twohydrogenplantsandanewsulphuricacidplant.Theconstructionstartadin1993andtheHarjavaltaproject
6、wascompletedin1996.Duringtheconstructionthenickelproductionwasdecidedtoincreasefurtherto40000tpa.TherealisedcapitalexpenditureofthewholeexpansionprojectofHarjavaltawasFIM1600million($US370million).Theexpansionofthenickelproductionhasmeantseveralprocesschanges
7、inthanickelsmelterandrefinery.ThedecisiontoinvestinnickelwasprecededbyresearchanddevelopmentworkatOutokumpuHarjavaltaMatalsOyandatOutokumpuRasaarchOy.Theinvestigationprogramledtothefollowingimprovementsoftheprocess:DevelopmentofdirectOutokumpuNickelSmelting(D
