3、AbstractSlip-weakeningisoneofthecharacteristicsoffaultedrockmaterialunderacertainloadingcondition.Non-uniformrockstructuremayexistinthevicinityoftheslipsurfaceinarockslope.Someportionsoftheslipsurfacemaybemutuallypenetratedbuttheothersmaynot.Forthelattercase,thecracksorthefaultsurfaceswill
4、undergosheardeformationbeforeasuccessivesurfaceformsundercertainloadings.Astheslippedportionadvances,slip-weakeningoccursoveradistancebehindthecracktip.Intheweakeningzone,theshearstrengthwilldecreasefromitspeakvaluetoresidualfrictionlevel.Thestresswillredistributealongthecracksurface.There
5、forethechangedlocalstressconcentrationwillcausethecracktoextendandtheratioofpenetrationoftheslipsurfacewillincrease.Fromthelarge-scaleviewofthewholeslipsurface,theshearstrengthwilldecreaseduetothedamageoftheinteriorrockstructure,andthefaultedrockbehavesasasofteningmaterial.Suchakindofmecha
6、nismhappensinmanypracticallandslidessubjectedtostrongearthquakes.Itshouldbenotedthatthismechanismisdifferentfromthatofthebreakageofstructuralclay,inwhichthegeologicalmaterialisregardedasamediumcontainingstructurallumpsandstructuralbands.Thestrain-softeningpropertyexhibitedinthestructuralcl
