6、TTER1.INTRODUCTIONCarinaeiscertainlyoneofthemostenigmaticobjectsonthesky(see,e.g.,Walbornetal.1978,Davidsonastro-ph/941009028Oct1994etal.1986,vanGenderenandThe1984,Viottietal.1989).Sinceitsbigoutburstoneandahalfcenturiesago,ithasbeenundercontinuousdetailedobservation.Consideringthisitissurpris
7、inghowlittleisknownevenaboutitsbasicproperties.Inthefollowing,byCar"wemeanboth,thecentralstarandthecircumstellarenvironment(Homunculus).Inthispaper,wepresentahighresolutionimageofCarmadein1985(Sect.2).TogetherwithIRandvisualobservationsoftheinnermostarcsecondaroundthestaritself,weuseitastheb
8、asisofadiscussionofthemorphologyofCarondi erentlengthscales(Sect.3).Weintroduceapossiblemodelforitsstructureandkinematics(Sects.4and5),andproposeobservationsthatmayhelptodecidethequestionforCar'sandtheHomunculus'structureandkine
