3、obalbusinessarena.Ingeneral,onecasuallyreferstoEuropeasawholebutmaymeanFranceorGer-manyorBelgium.Becauseofhistoryandgeography,peoplecombineallcountriesinEuropeinonecategory.Inre-centyears,however,onemayactuallyspeakofEuropeasasingleentityandnotbethatfarfromthetruth.T

4、hevari-ousEuropeanUnion(EU)institutionscontinuetoevolveandtoshapehowtheworldviewsandnegotiateswithall27membercountries.GraduatestudentsofGeorgiaStateUniversitywereabletoexploresomeoftheseissuesinthethree-weekstudyabroadprograminToulouse,FranceinMay2007.Thefirsthalfof

5、theprogramwasdevotedtomarketing,whilethesecondhalffocusedonmanagementissues.LedbyProfessorsCordulaBarzantnyandAlainKlarsfeldofEcoleSupérieuredeCommerceToulouse,studentslearnedaboutcompensationandthesocialstructureinmostEUcountriesandEUdirectivesinareassuchascollectiv

6、eredundancies,healthandsafetyanddiscrimination.DiscussionsregardingcompensationissuesinEUcountriestouchedonhowmuchoftotalcompensationisbenefitsandtherealcosttotheemployers.Thedifferencesincompensationbetweenthewesterncountriesandtheeasterncountriesandtheeffectonhowfi

7、rmsdecidewheretoopenanofficealsogeneratedinterestingdiscussionsamongthestudents.MostwereabletorelatetothesedifferencesbecauseoftheregionaldifferencesinpayhereintheUnitedStates.Interestingly,theconceptofregionaldifferencesincompensationisfairlynewtotheEUcitizenswhower
