1、THEPRESIDENT:Fellowcitizens:Foreightyears,ithasbeenmyhonortoserveasyourPresident.Thefirstdecadeofthisnewcenturyhasbeenaperiodofconsequence—atimesetapart.Tonight,withathankfulheart,Ihaveaskedforafinalopportunitytosharesomethoughtsonthejourneythatwehavetraveledtogether,andthe

2、futureofournation.Fivedaysfromnow,theworldwillwitnessthevitalityofAmericandemocracy.Inatraditiondatingbacktoourfounding,thepresidencywillpasstoasuccessorchosenbyyou,theAmericanpeople.StandingonthestepsoftheCapitolwillbeamanwhosehistoryreflectstheenduringpromiseofourland.Thi

3、sisamomentofhopeandprideforourwholenation.AndIjoinallAmericansinofferingbestwishestoPresident-ElectObama,hiswifeMichelle,andtheirtwobeautifulgirls.TonightIamfilledwithgratitude—toVicePresidentCheneyandmembersofmyadministration;toLaura,whobroughtjoytothishouseandlovetomylife

4、;toourwonderfuldaughters,BarbaraandJenna;tomyparents,whoseexampleshaveprovidedstrengthforalifetime.Andaboveall,IthanktheAmericanpeopleforthetrustyouhavegivenme.Ithankyoufortheprayersthathaveliftedmyspirits.AndIthankyouforthecountlessactsofcourage,generosity,andgracethatIhav

5、ewitnessedthesepasteightyears.Thisevening,mythoughtsreturntothefirstnightIaddressedyoufromthishouse—Septemberthe11th,2001.Thatmorning,terroriststooknearly3,000livesintheworstattackonAmericasincePearlHarbor.IrememberstandingintherubbleoftheWorldTradeCenterthreedayslater,surr

6、oundedbyrescuerswhohadbeenworkingaroundtheclock.Iremembertalkingtobravesoulswhochargedthroughsmoke-filledcorridorsatthePentagon,andtohusbandsandwiveswhoselovedonesbecameheroesaboardFlight93.IrememberArleneHoward,whogavemeherfallenson’spoliceshieldasareminderofallthatwaslost

7、.AndIstillcarryhisbadge.Astheyearspassed,mostAmericanswereabletoreturntolifemuchasithadbeenbefore9/11.ButIneverdid.Everymorning,Ireceivedabriefingonthethreatstoournation.Ivowedtodoeverythinginmypowertokeepussafe.Overthepastsevenyears,anewDepartmentofHomelandSecurityhasbeenc
