2、tionofliteraryhistorymayresult.ThiscautionisparticularlyrelevantinanassessmentofthedifferencesbetweenBlackpoetsattheturnofthecentury(1900-1909)andthoseofthegenerationofthe1920’s.Thesedifferencesincludethebolderandmoreforthrightspeechofthelatergenerationanditstechnic
3、alinventiveness.Itshouldberemembered,though,thatcomparabledifferencesalsoexistedforsimilargenerationsofWhitepoets.Whenpoetsofthe1910’sand1920’sareconsideredtogether,however,thedistinctionsthatliteraryhistoriansmightmakebetween“conservative”and“experimental”wouldbeof
4、littlesignificanceinadiscussionofBlackpoets,althoughtheseremainhelpfulclassificationsforWhitepoetsofthesedecades.Certainlydifferencescanbenotedbetween“conservative”BlackpoetssuchasCounterCullenandClaudeMcKayand“experimental”onessuchasJeanToomerandLangstonHughes.ButB
5、lackpoetswerenotbattlingoveroldornewstyles;rather,oneaccomplishedBlackpoetwasreadytowelcomeanother,whateverhisorherstyle,forwhatmatteredwasracialpride.However,inthe1920’sBlackpoetsdiddebatewhethertheyshoulddealwithspecificallyracialsubjects.Theyaskedwhethertheyshoul
6、donlywriteaboutBlackexperienceforaBlackaudienceorwhethersuchdemandswererestrictive.Itmaybesaid,though,thatvirtuallyallthesepoetswrotetheirbestpoemswhentheyspokeoutofracialfeeling,racebeing,asJamesWeldonJohnsonrightlyputit,“perforcethethingtheNegropoetknowsbest.”Atth
7、eturnofthecentury,bycontrast,mostBlackpoetsgenerallywroteintheconventionalmanneroftheageandexpressednoble,ifvague,emotionsintheirpoetry.Thesepoetswerenotunusuallygifted,thoughRoscoeJamisonandG.M.McClellenmaybementionedasexceptions.Theychosenottowriteindialect,which,
