2、aspecialistofficerintheBritishGovernmentCommunications’Headquarters.DuringthoseyearsMichaelconcurrentlytrainedhimselfinclassicalChinese.ForhisworktheSchoolofOrientalandAfricanStudiesawardedhimwithafirstclasshonoursdegreein1951andadoctoratein1963forhisstudyontheHanadministrativedo
3、cumentsfromJuyan.From1956onwardsheservedasLecturerintheHistoryoftheFarEastattheUniversityofLondon.In1963,hetookupanappointmentasUniversityLecturerinChineseStudiesintheFacultyofOrientalStudiesatCambridge,wherehewouldserveasateacher,scholarandadministratorfornearlythreedecadesuntil
4、hisretirementin1990.Inretirementanduptothepresentday,Michael’sscholarshiphasremainedprolific.Hehasproduced,editedandco-editedpioneeringreferenceworksonpre-imperialandearlyimperialChina,directedthecompilationofseveralvolumesoftheCambridgeHistoryofChinaandcontinuestoplayhosttonumer
5、ousscholars,colleaguesandfriendsatClareHall,hiscollege,andWillowHouse,hishome. HismanycontributionstotheCambridgeacademiccommunityincludeappointmentsasChairmanoftheFacultyBoardofOrientalStudies,fellowandVice-PresidentofClareHall,DeputyDirectoroftheNeedhamResearchInstituteandDirec
6、torofStudiesatQueens’College,SidneySussexCollege,LucyCavendishCollegeandWolfsonCollege.MichaelhasalsobeeninstrumentalinpromotingtheprofessionbeyondCambridge.HeservedasPresidentoftheEuropeanAssociationofChineseStudies(1984-86),asexecutivecouncilmemberoftheUniversities’ChinaCommitt
7、eeofLondonandtheRoyalAsiaticSocietyandhasbeenamemberontheeditorialboardofseveralscholarlyjournalsincludingAsiaMajorandEarlyChina.HehasheldvisitingprofessorshipsattheUniversitiesofStockholm,HarvardandChicagoandhasbeenavisitingscholartomanyinstitutionsandorganizationsinChina,Taiwan
