2、ska@cs.man.ac.ukSummary.Automaticpatternrecognitionisusuallyconsideredasanengineeringareawhichfocussesonthedevelopmentandevaluationofsystemsthatimitateorassisthumansintheirabilityofrecognizingpatterns.Itmay,however,alsobeconsideredasasciencethatstudiesthefacultyofhumanbeings(
3、andpossiblyotherbiologicalsystems)todiscover,distinguish,characterizepatternsintheirenvironmentandaccordinglyidentifynewobservations.Theengineeringapproachtopatternrecognitionisinthisviewanattempttobuildsystemsthatsimulatethisphenomenon.Bydoingthat,scientificunderstandingisga
