3、identify10environmentallegalissuestowatch.TheU.S.EnvironmentalProtectionAgency(EPA)isstudyingtheimpactsofhydraulicfracturingondrinkingwaterresourcesprimarilyinshaleformations.LookforEPA'sinitialstudyresultsthisyearandanadditionalreportbasedonlong-termstudyprojectsin2014.T

4、heresultswillnodoubtbeanimpetusforregulatoryandpolicychangesthatcouldhaveasignificantimpactontheshalegasindustry.Hydraulicfracturinginvolvesinjectingwater,sandandchemicalsdeepundergroundtobreakupshalerockformationsthatcontainnaturalgas.Underthestudy,EPAresearchers,incolla

5、borationwithoutsideexpertsfromthepublicandprivatesector,willexaminetheimpactsof:largevolumewaterwithdrawalsfromgroundandsurfacewaters;surfacespillsresultingfromhydraulicfracturingfluids;theinjectionandfracturingprocess;surfacespillsofflowbackandproducedwater;andwastewater

6、treatmentandwastedisposal.EPAisalsodevelopingnationalstandardsforwastewaterdischargesproducedbynaturalgasextractionfromundergroundcoalbedandshaleformations.ThefederalCleanWaterAct(CWA)effluentguidelinesprogramsetsnationalstandardsforindustrialwastewaterdischargesbasedonbe

7、stavailabletechnologiesthatareeconomicallyachievable.Effluentguidelinesforoilandgasextractionprohibittheon-sitedirectdischargeofwastewaterfromshalegasextractionintowatersoftheUnitedStates.Whilesomeofthewastewaterfromshalegasextractionisreusedorre-injected,thereststillrequ
