3、ications1byCALLpractitioners.Similarly,NLPresearchersoughttobeinterestedin(human)firstandsecondlanguagelearning,andindevelopingNLPsystemsinsupportoflanguagedevelopmentandlearning.Unfortunately,neitherisactuallythecase.Instead—atleastintheeyeofthecasualbeholder—thetwodisciplinesseemtoliveincompl
4、etelydifferentworlds.Inthenextsection,Iwilltrytomakethisstatementabitmoreconcrete,andinsection3,wewilldiscusssomeofthereasonsthatcanbeinferredtoliebehindthisstateofaffairs.Insection4,Iwillsaysomethingaboutmyownviewsonthematter,includinghowthecurrentsituationcouldbeimproved,andinsection5Iwilltry
5、todrawsomegeneralconclusionsandventuresomerecommendationsforthefuture.Theresearchreportedherewasmadepossiblebyfundingfromthefollowingtwosources:(1)thePLeaSeandPALaTesubprojectsofthePADLRproject,fundedbytheKnutandAliceWallenbergFoundationintheframeworkoftheWallenbergGlobalLearningNetwork,and(2)t
6、heCrossCheckproject,fundedbyVINNOVAintheframeworkoftheLanguageTechnologyProgram.1Inthispaper,IwillnotdiscussSpeechTechnologyatall.ThisfieldisnormallyincludedwhenweusethetermsLEor(H)LT,butnormallyexcludedifwesayCLorNLP.MyownbackgroundisinCL(andinlanguages),andIsimplylackthenecessaryqualification
