2、hprogressintoolstosupportmulti-agentsystemsdevelopmentusingsuchlanguages.However,muchworkisstillrequiredinmechanismsthatcanreducetheburden,typicallyplacedonprogrammers,ofensur-ingthatagentsbehaverationally,hencebeingeffectiveandasefficientaspossible.Onesuchmechanismsisreasoningaboutdeclarativeg
3、oals,whichisincreasinglyappearingintheagentsliterature;itallowsagentstomakebetteruseofresources,toavoidplanshinderingtheexecutionofotherplans,andtobeabletotakeadvantageofopportunitiesforreducingthenumberofplansthathavetobeexecutedtoachievecertaincombina-tionsofgoals.Inthispaper,weintroduceaP
4、etrinetbasedapproachtosuchreasoning,andwereportonexperimentalresultsshowingthatthistechniquecanhaveasignificantimpactintheagent’sbehaviour(eventhoughtheseexperimentsdonotyetcoverreasoningaboutre-sourceusage).Ourlongtermgoalistoprovideanumberofalternativeapproachesforsuchreasoning,andincorpora
5、tethemintointerpretersforagent-orientedprogramminglanguagesinsuchawaythatthemostappropriateapproachisusedatgivencircumstances.1IntroductionRecentyearshaveseenanastonishingprogressinthelevelofsophisticationandpracticaluseofvariousdifferentagent-orientedprogramminglanguages[3].Theselanguagespro
6、videconstructsthatwerespecificallycreatedfortheim-plementationofsystemsdesignedonthebasisofthetypicalabstractionsusedintheareaofautonomousagentsandmulti-agentsystems,thereforeofmuchhelpforthedevelopmentoflarge-scalemulti-agentsystems.However,thebur-denofensuringthatanagentbehavesrationallyina
7、givenapplicationislefttoprogrammers(eventhoughthelanguagesdooffersomesupportforthattask).Clearly,itwouldmaketheworkofmulti-agentsystemsdevelopersmucheas-ierifwecouldprovide(semi-)automaticmechanismstofacilitatethetaskofensuringsuchrationality,provid
