3、dcomponents.Theearlydetectionanddiagnosisoffaultsinchemicalprocessesisveryimportantbothfromtheviewpointofplantsafetyaswellasreducedmanufacturingcosts.Theconventionalwayusedinfaultdetectionanddiagnosisisthroughtheuseofmodelsoftheprocess,whichisnoteasytobeachievedinmanyc
4、ases.Inrecentyears,anartificialintelligencetechniquesuchasneuralnetworkhasbeensuccessfullyusedforpatternrecognitionandassuchitcanbesuitableforuseinfaultdiagnosisofprocesses[1].Theapplicationofneuralnetworkmethodsinprocessfaultdetectionanddiagnosisisdemonstratedinthiswo
5、rkintwocasestudiesusingsimulatedchemicalplantsystems.Bothsystemsweresuccessfullydiagnosedofthefaultsintroducedinthem.Theneuralnetworkswereabletogeneralisetosuccessfullydiagnosedfaultcombinationsitwasnotexplicitlytrainedupon.Thus,neuralnetworkcanbefullyappliedinindustri
