3、yareshieldvolcanoes—volcanoeswithbroad,slopingslidesformedbymoltenrock.AllfourshowdistinctivelavachannelsandotherflowfeaturessimilartothosefoundonshieldvolcanoesonEarth.ImagesoftheMartiansurfacerevealmanyhundredsofvolcanoes.MostofthelargestvolcanoesareassociatedwiththeTharsisbulge,butmanysmalle
4、ronesarefoundinthenorthernplains.ThegreatheightofMartianvolcanoesisadirectconsequenceoftheplanet’slowsurfacegravity.Aslavaflowsandspreadstoformashieldvolcano,thevolcano’seventualheightdependsonthenewmountain’sabilitytosupportitsownweight.Thelowerthegravity,thelessertheweightandthegreatertheheig
5、htofthemountain.ItisnoaccidentthatMaxwellMonsonVenusandtheHawaiianshieldvolcanoesonEarthrisetoaboutthesameheight(about10kilometers)abovetheirrespectivebases-EarthandVenushavesimilarsurfacegravity.Mars’ssurfacegravityisonly40percentthatofEarth,sovolcanoesriseroughly2.5timesashigh.AretheMartiansh
