2、usedfromtheearly1960sandhavepracticallyeliminatedthemoredifficult-to-usealkalisilicatezincsinrecenttimes.Unfortunately,theperformanceoftheethylsilicatezincsfallsshortoftheirwater-bornerivals.Inaddition,theyaresolvent-borneandareincreasinglyenvironmentallysuspect.Ata1989SSPCseminarinHouston,anof

3、fshoreoilproduceradvisedtheauthorthathiscompany’smaintenancepaintingcomprisedabrasiveblastingandtheapplicationofone,150-to200-micronthick(six-toeight-mil)singlecoatofwater-bornezincsilicatetoallsurfacesfromjustabovethewaterlineonplatformsintheGulfofMexico.Itwasclaimedthatmudcrackingwasnotaprobl

4、embecausethecoatingwasawater-bornezincbasedonthe“new”highratiosilicatetechnologydevelopedbyNASAfortheprotectionofrocketlaunchers.Consequently,thepresentauthorbegananinvestigationintothepossibilityofchangingfromthemulti-coatsystemstoasingle-coat,highratiozincsystemonmycompany’splantson-andoffsho

5、re.Atechnicalsearchrevealedsomeverypromisingcasehistoriesonsinglecoatalkalisilicatezincapplicationsinmoderatetoseveremarineenvironmentswherelong-termperformanceinexcessof20yearswasindicated.Examplesincludethefollowing.·Twolargedrillingmudtanks,coatedwith1coatofanalkalisilicatezincin1970,arestil

6、lfullyprotected.·Crudeoiltankfloatingroofshavebeenprotectedwith1coatofalkalisilicateinorganiczincforover15years.·Allstructuralsteelandequipmentsurfacesatagastreatmentplantwerepaintedwith1coatofethylsilicatezincin1979andarestillfullyprotected.·AttheOkinawaRefinery,a$US4millionsavingswasquotedtoc
