3、urement,basedonthereflectionofultrasound,isevaluatedforuseinfluidfilmjournalbearingapplications.Anultrasonicwavewillbepartiallyreflectedwhenitstrikesathinlayerbetweentwosolidmedia.Theproportionofthewavereflecteddependsonthethicknessofthelayeranditsacousticproperties.Asimplequ

4、asi-staticspringmodelshowshowthereflectiondependsonthestiffnessofthelayeralone.Thismethodhasbeenfirstevaluatedusingflatplatesseparatedbyafilmofoil,andthenusedinthemeasurementofoilfilmsinahydrody-namicjournalbearing.Atransducerismountedontheoutsideofthejournalandapulsepropagate

5、dthroughtheshell.Thepulseisreflectedbackattheoilfilmandreceivedbythesametransducer.Theamplitudeofthereflectedwaveisprocessedinthefrequencydomain.Thespringmodelisthenusedtodeterminetheoilfilmstiffnessthatcanbereadilyconvertedtofilmthickness.Whilstthereflectedamplitudeofthewaveis

6、dependentonthefrequencycomponent,themeasuredfilmthicknessisnot;thisindicatesthatthequasi-staticassumptionholds.Measurementsofthelubricantfilmgeneratedinasimplejournalbear-inghavebeentakenoverarangeofloadsandspeeds.Theresultsarecomparedwithpredictionsfromclassicalhydrodynam
