2、WestIndies,Kingston7,Jamaica(Received24April1979)Mycoplasma-likeorganisms(MLO)associatedwithlethalyellowingdiseaseofcoconutpalmsexhibitedarangeofdifferentmorphologiesevenwithinthesamesieveelement.Themorphologieswererevealedbygraphicreconstructionfromribbonsofserialultrathinsecti

3、onscontaining45sections.Fivedifferentmorphotypeswererecognizedamongstthe120organismsreconstructed.MLOcouldbesaccate,erythrocyte-like,cylindrical,monili-formorfiliform.Thedifferentmorphotypesshoweddifferencesinlineardimensionsapartfromtheirparticularmorphologicalcharacteristics.S

4、accateMLOweregenerallythesmallest,themaximumlengthbeing1pm,whilstthefiliformorganismscouldbemorethan16,umlong.ThemorphologiesoftheMLOwereanalogoustothosenowrecognizedasusualforMycoplasmaandAcholeplasmaspeciesinvitroduringthelaterstagesofdevelopment.Comparisonoftheindividualprofi

5、leshapesusedinthereconstructionswiththoseofMLOfromotherdiseasedplantssuggestthatmanypreviousinterpretationsofMLOmorphologymayhavebeentoosimple.Withtheinsightprovidedbytheunder-standingoftherelationshipbetweenprofileshapeandthree-dimensionalform,theultra-structureofindividualprof

6、ilesisshowntobeanimportantindicatorofform.INTRODUCTIONObservationsofintactmycoplasmastakenfromcultureshowthatalthoughtheyoccurmostfrequentlyassimplespheresorfilamentousbodiestheyarecapableofbecomingfreelybranchedorevengivingrisetomycelialcomplexes(Razin,1978;Tully,1978).Othermod

7、ificationsofform,suchasringsandbeadedchains,havealsobeendescribed.Theelucidationofmorphologyinvitrobegannearly70yearsagobuttheexceptionallydetailedlightmicroscopicstudiesofTurner(1935)providesomeofthebestearlyillustrations.Morerecently,theuseofsimilarormoresophisticatedtechnique
