3、ealawayaman'ssensesandrenderhimfoolish,irascible,uncontrollableanddangerous.Similarly,onenineteenthcenturyobserverattributeddeliriumtremens,pervertedsexuality,impotency,insanityandcancertothesmokingandchewingoftobacco.Despitesuchwarnings,alcoholandtobaccousetookdee
4、prootinAmericansociety.DeTocquevillenotedwhatharddrinkerstheAmericanswere,andDickenswascompelledtoreportthatinallthepublicplacesofAmerica,thisfilthycustom[tobaccochewing]isrecognized.Nevertheless,thestraininourcultureopposedtoallnon-medicaldrugusepersisted(National
5、CommissiononMarihuanaandDrugAbuse,1972).IntroductionAllmannerofsubstanceshavebeenusedbyAmericansthroughoutourhistory.Colonialresidentsandtheirpredecessorsreliedonderivativesofnaturalsubstancestocureailments,increasesexualpotency,relievepain--andtoprovidepureoldfash
6、ionedpleasure.Untilthelate1800s,abstentionistsandprohibitionistshadarelativelyeasytaskinidentifyingtheirtargetsforattack:Tobaccouserswereconspicuousintheirenjoyment.Alcoholicbeveragedrinkerscouldbefoundineverysaloon,andalcoholwasservedopenlyinhomesandatsocialgather
