1、PerformanceComparisonofTwoDynamicRoutingProtocols:RIPandOSPFABSTRACT:Therearetwomainclassesofadaptiveroutingprotocolsintheinternet:distancevectorandlinkstate.Thispaperpresentsthecomparisonbetweendistancevectorandlinkstate.ItalsooutlinestheprosandconsofRIPand

2、OSPFprotocolsandaperformanceanalysiswithsomepossibleenhancementispresented.NetworkSimulator(NS2)isusedtoobtaintheperformanceresultsofthetwoclassesusingdifferentmetricssuchasthroughput,packetdelayandpacketloss.ResultsofthesimulationshowthatOSPFhasabetterperfo

3、rmancethanRIPintermsofaveragethroughputandpacketdelayindifferentnetworksizes,whileRIPisbetterthanOSPFintermsofnumberofpacketlossinlargenetworks.Keywords:DynamicRoutingProtocols,RIP,OSPF,NS21.INTRODUCTIONNetworksrelyonroutingprotocolstokeeptheroutingtablesupd

4、ated.Routingisusedinnetworkstocontrolandforwarddata.Foraroutertobeefficientandeffective,thecriticalfactoristhechoiceoftheroutingprotocol.Routingprotocolsfindapathbetweennetworknodes;ifmultiplepathsexistforagivennodethentheshortestpathisselectedbyprotocol.Eac

5、hprotocolhasacostmetricthatitappliestoeachpath.Thepathwithlowestmetricisselectedbyprotocol.Metricstocompareoneroutingprotocolwithanotherarebasedonconvergencetimetoadapttotopologychanges,optimalityistochoosethebestpath,notnecessarilyatminimumcostbuttoensuream

6、inimumdelayortominimizeoverheadandspacerequirementstostoretheroutingtable[1][5][7].Therestofpaperisorganizedasfollows:Section2isanoverviewofroutingprotocols.InSection3and4RIPandOSPFarediscussed.WestudiedRIPandOSPFbecausethisinteriorroutingprotocoliswidelyuse

7、dintheinternet.Inadditiontheprosandconsoftheseroutingprotocolsarestudiedinbrief.InSection5thesystemmodelusedforsimulationisexamined,andinSection6weimplementroutingprotocolsusingNS2.TheresultsofsimulationshowthatOSPFisbetterthanRIPinsomeaspects.Butinotheraspe
