3、nvestigationsandearthworks.1.INTRODUCTIONTheinvestigationandre-useevaluationofmanyIrishboulderclaysoilspresentsdifficultiesforboththegeotechnicalengineerandtheroaddesignengineer.Theseglacialtillorboulderclaysoilsaremainlyoflowplasticityandhaveparticlesizesrangingfromclayto

4、boulders.Mostofourboulderclaysoilscontainvaryingproportionsofsand,gravel,cobblesandbouldersinaclayorsiltmatrix.Theamountoffinesgovernstheirbehaviourandthesiltcontentmakesitveryweathersusceptible.Moisturecontentscanbehighlyvariablerangingfromaslowas7%forthehardgreyblackDubl

5、inboulderclayupto20-25%forMidland,South-WestandNorth-Westlightgreyboulderclaydeposits.Theabilityofboulderclaysoilstotake-infreewateriswellestablishedandpoorplanningofearthworksoftenamplifiesthis.Thefinesoilconstituentsaregenerallysensitivetosmallincreasesinmoisturecontentw

6、hichoftenleadtolossinstrengthandrenderthesoilsunsuitableforre-useasengineeringfill.Manyofourboulderclaysoils(especiallythosewithintermediatetypesiltsandfinesandmatrix)havebeenrejectedattheselectionstage,butgoodplanningshowsthattheycaninfactfulfilspecificationrequirementsin

7、termsofcompactionandstrength.Theselectionprocessshouldaimtomaximisetheuseoflocallyavailablesoilsandwithcarefulevaluationitispossibletouseorincorporate‘poorormarginalsoils’withinfillareasandembankments.Fillmaterialneedstobeplacedatamoisturecontentsuchthatitisneithertoowetto
