4、achanintroductoryprogrammingclassinJava.IhadtaughtitthreetimesandIwasgettingfrustrated.Thefailurerateintheclasswastoohighand,evenforstudentswhosucceeded,theoveralllevelofachievementwastoolow.OneoftheproblemsIsawwasthebooks.Theyweretoobig,withtoomuchu
5、nnecessarydetailaboutJava,andnotenoughhigh-levelguidanceabouthowtoprogram.Andtheyallsufferedfromthetrapdooreffect:theywouldstartouteasy,proceedgradually,andthensomewherearoundChapter5thebottomwouldfallout.Thestudentswouldgettoomuchnewmaterial,toofast
6、,andIwouldspendtherestofthesemesterpickingupthepieces.Twoweeksbeforethefirstdayofclasses,Idecidedtowritemyownbook.Mygoalswere:•Keepitshort.Itisbetterforstudentstoread10pagesthannotread50pages.•Becarefulwithvocabulary.Itriedtominimizethejargonanddefinee
