2、ractThebucklingofcompressively-loadedmembersisoneofthemostimportantfactorslimitingtheoverallstrengthandstabilityofastructure.Ihavedevelopednoveltechniquesforusingactivecontroltowiggleastructuralelementinsuchawaythatbucklingisprevented.Ipresenttheresul
3、tsofanalysis,simulation,andexperimentationtoshowthatbucklingcanbepreventedthroughcomputer-controlledadjustmentofdynamicalbehavior.Ihaveconstructedasmall-scalerailroad-styletrussbridgethatcontainscompressivemembersthatactivelyresistbucklingthroughtheus
4、eofpiezo-electricactuators.Ihavealsoconstructedaprototypeactivelycontrolledcolumninwhichthecontrolforcesareappliedbytendons,aswellasacompositesteelcolumnthatincorporatespiezo-ceramicactuatorsthatareusedtocounteractbuckling.Activecontrolofbucklingallow
