2、ongroundswheretheinhabitantsofacitymeet,exchangeideas,evenengageinavarietyofculturalperformances.ThisarticlereportsonfieldworkabouttheuseofpublicspaceinShanghaitoday.Wefindagreatdiversityofuses,rangingfromvendorswhoselltheirwarestopeoplewhoengageinheatedandextensivepoliti-caldiscussionstoperformerso
3、fBeijingoperaandballroomdancing.Wealsofindthatthelocalauthoritiesusealight,andsometimescovert,handintheiroversightofinhabitantsinsuchspaces.Finally,wediscoverthatpowerfulsocialdifferencesandinequalitiesbetweennativeinhabitantsandworking-classmigrants,whichhaveemergedduringtheperiodofeconomicreforman
4、dmarkettransition,arenowac-tivelyinevidenceinthequalityanduseofpublicspaceinShanghai.Thearticleputsthesefindingswithinabroadertheoreticalcontext,concludingintheendthatformany—thoughnotall—inhabitantspublicmanisaliveandwellinShanghai.ThisisastudyofpublicspaceinShanghai,China.Publicspaceandhowitisused
5、hasbecomeatopicofgrowinginterestamongscholarsintheUnitedStatesandelsewhereintheWest.Formanyscholarssuchspacerepresentssomethingessentialtotheproperworkingsofcities.Ifsuchspaceisactivelyusedbytheresidentsofaplace,andiftheyareabletoengagewithoneanothersociallyaswellaspolitically,then,sotheargumentgoes
6、,thecity,orcommunity,ofwhichtheyareapartwillbeavibrant,indeed,evenafundamentallydemocraticsite.Conversely,ifsuchspaceisnotusedactivelybytheresidents—indeedifassomearguetherearegrowingconstraintsontheavailabilityanduseofsuchspaces—thentheintegrity,perhapsevenbroadviability,ofthelargersocialorderitsel
