6、theattrac-tiveinteractionresponsiblefortheformationofCooperpairsinhighTsuperconductors6.cMetalsoftensupportelectronicstatesthatareconfinedtothesurfaceforminganearly2Delectrondensitylayer.However,itwasarguedthatthesesystemscouldnotsupportlow-energycollectiveexcita

7、tionsbecausethesewouldbescreenedoutbytheunderlyingbulkelectrons7.Infact,metallicsurfacesshouldonlysupporttheconventionalsurfaceplasmons8,modeswithenergiesofafeweV,dependingonlyontheelectrondensity,withimportantapplicationsinsurface-plasmonresonancemicroscopy9,10
