3、ategiesofrecyclingmaterials,reducingconsumption,andreusingmaterialsareuniversallypopularamongwesternindustrializednations.Firmsthatexhibitmoreintensecommitmenttoenvironmentalismthantheirpeersaugmentuseoftheseuniversalstrategieswithvariousspecializedthrust
4、s,suchasenvironmentalaudits.Thereislittlequestionthatenvironmentalissueshavebecomeanimportantconsiderationformanybusinessdecisionmakersinrecentyears,withsomecorporateexecutiveshavingreferredtothe1990sasthe"decadeoftheenvironment."Manycompaniesaredesigning
5、theirproductstobemoreenvironmentallyfriendly,andmanyareusingmoreenvironmentallyfriendlypackagingmaterials.Estimatesofthecurrentenvironmental,orgreen,marketrangeupwardsof$200billion.Whilethereisaburgeoningbodyofliteratureinvolvingenvironmentalissuesinother
6、businessdisciplinessuchasmarketing,thecorrespondingliteratureinvolvinglogisticshasbeencharacterizedas"smallbutexpanding."Spurringthisexpansionistherecognitionbyanumberofwriters,suchasLambertandStockaswellasHandfieldandNichols,thatrespondingtoenvironmental
7、issueswillbeoneofthemajorchallengesfacinglogisticsandsupplychainmanagementintheforeseeablefuture.Suchrecognitiontendstoconfirmtheviewthatenvironmentalismhas"comeofage"asamajortopicinlogisticsandnolongercanberegardedassimplyaperipheralconcernorfad.Indeed,W
